Last week, the Rappahannock supervisors received their copies of the proposed 1984-85 school budget. There was little reaction to the funding. The supervisors voted unanimously to guarantee an estimated $28,000 from next year’s budget to pay for emergency roof repairs needed immediately at the elementary school. Otherwise, they said nothing.
However, we can expect plenty of gulps when the board takes a hard look at the figures. As proposed, the 1984-85 school budget has a bottom line of $2,629,155, 12 percent more than this year’s $2,354,662. That will be difficult enough to get down for board members known for their fiscal conservatism. But they may choke when they calculate that local funds required to support proposed school expenditures will climb by 29 percent from $1,070,866 appropriated in 198384 to $1,385,863 requested for next year.
We hope that instead of getting lumps in their throats, the supervisors will take a second look, think about the reasons for the increase, swallow hard and approve what the School Board has asked for without cuts.
