Following are the first, second and third place winners in an essay contest held for Wakefield students in the upper and lower schools. The students were to write scary stories for Halloween.
Upper School Winners
First Place-“Pkture Perfect” by Josephine A. Rood, Grade IkThe floor of the cave drops sharply here,” the booming voice of Jim Mackensie echoed eerily in the hollow space ahead. He played the beam of his flashlight over a scree of rocky fragments which sloped steeply down into the blackness below.
“There’s a ledge here somewhere that we can climb down...” he continued, searching with his torch. “Ah, here it is. Good, not far now.” Frank Mobley regarded the narrow ledge without enthusiasm, but there seemed nothing for it but to follow Jim, who was already descending. Pressing himself against the wall, he began to feel his way gingerly along it. The combination of height, darkness, and confined space made his head spin, and he wondered just how far he would have to fall if he slipped.
