astonishment was based on a totally different discovery. Locked in her arms was a small babe whose earnest eyes made me rejoice in knowing that someone besides me was still living.

Before that moment I had thought that maybe God had been keeping me alive for some specail reason, but now looking at it in a more scientific view, maybe my being sheltered in the car, and the baby’s being covered by his mother protected us from the radiation that would have immediately killed us otherwise. Whatever the case, I took the baby in my arms, and he touched my face with his little hand. I wonder if I had a baby of my own, and if I did I wonder if it’s still alive...I wish I could remember.

It is now the fourth day since the nightmare began. I find that the radiation has been depleting my mind at a tremendous rate. I can’t even remember where I found this pen which I have been using to write this diary. I read what I wrote yesterday, and I discovered that the only thing that remains in my mind is the finding of the baby.

He is the only one who is preventing my going insane. I found some food in an old refrigerator in the kitchen, but it sterns to be in an unusually fast deteriorating stage, It dpesn't mattey because I haven’t eaten in fbUr days, and yet T don’t feel hungry. I doubt that the baby is hungry either. He just lies in my arms all day, and plays with my fingers as he is doing now, even as I write.

This house, as far as my memory goes, has been my only home. I dare not wander away from it because my sense of direction has become so poor that I have even lost my way in the house a few times, and it only has five rooms... I think. I don’t know if there is anything else to write-1 can’t think anymore.

Fifth day? The baby died today. I put it in the arms of his mother like it was when I first saw him. I am so, so sad. I feel I lost my only frend in the hole worrld.

I don’t know wat day is now. I can’t remember nothing...I allways find me in parts of the house and no know wat I’m doing there. I get so scared but then I see the pretty mother with my darling baby, and I’m no more scared. Right now they are lying in the bed. My true trends will never leave me.

I was going to rite today but I forgett wat to say. I cann't rite anniway becose my finggers hurt. They r becoming like old ladiy’s.

I feelling sic now-so verie sic. Who is two persons lying in bed? Pelease heelp me.

Third Place-Robyn Battaile, Grade 8:1 loved New York. Alive, active and mysterious. The back alleys are perfectly horrid. Filth and decay line the street. Lights and street gangs go together like a puzzle. There must be at least a hundred gangs in New York, each with its own little territory. Bums also inhabit the streets. Without

a home or food they just ^.wander
