Randall Updike presided during the auction, telling buyen the bidding would be informal. “There’s no fancy auctioneering,” he promised, then set opening bid prices at 70 cents a pound. Prices quickly jumped up to and over the $1 mark. Steer weights ranged from 295 to 790 pounds.
Volunteers Conduct Cookouts
Sperryville Volunteer firefighters and Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad Personnel, which are organizationally and financially separate, each conducted fund-raising cookouts during the weekend. Sperryville firefighters grilled hamburgers and hot dogs outside the Parkway Gift Shop; Sperryville Rescue staged its fluid raiser outside the Sperryville Emporium.
The volunteer firefighters will use proceeds from the cookouts for a new addition, according to Steve Leake of the Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department. Ground has been broken and footers placed for the addition, which the firefighters hope will house two more bays in a two-story structure.
