struggled helplessly, its shrill cries barely audible to Frank’s ears. With an exclamation of satisfaction, he thrust his hand into the net and draw the bat out, grasping it firmly behind the head so that it could not bite. For a moment he held it close to his face, looking into the frightened, beady black eyes.
“Well, look at it as a sacrifice to Science,” he advised it, and seizing one of its wings in his other hand, he broke the fragile bone with a deft twist of his wrist. Dropping the helpless bat on the ground, he began quickly setting up his strobe lights and mounting his camera on the tripod. The bat scuffled about on the floor, uselessly flapping its one good wing. Frank focused the camera on it and waited.
Presently, hearing a faint rustling, he looked down and saw a cockroach scuttling across the floor. The bat, snapping and flapping its good wing, sent it scurrying off, but in a moment it was back, and there was another, and another, and many more attracted by the bat’s struggles and cries. They crawled over their helpless victim, quick jaws tearing at the flesh around its eyes and mouth. The bat began to scream, its pink mouth stretched wide in agony.
