It took me about fifteen meinutea to find the right key. I should have guessed. It was the oldest, darkest looking key there.
Remarkably, the gate swung open without the customary squeak. It almost looked as if it had been oiled, I turned on my flashlight, and started down the stairs. Bats took off in every direction, but as I got farther into the maze of the actual subway, they started to thin out. People suddenly became visible, and I was in a crowd. A subway soared past, and I felt its rush of wind.
“C’mon Mike! Get out of it! You're hallucinating!” Yeah, that’s it I’m hallucinating. Gotta stop that, but where did that breeze come from?
Walking faster now, I went to the left, steadily swinging the fl«KHght back and forth. There was a small glowing blob of something on the wall up ahead. When I looked at it closer, it was a blob of pulsating jelly, just like a heart. I took out a bottle, and scraped off the jelly into it with a stick. I walked farther down and found more of this jelly, glowing and thumping.
I took a little bit of this jelly, also, and was going to start back when I saw a pile of the jelly. I looked closer, and saw that this jelly had a deariah color, and under it was a face distorted with pain and half rottened away. I turned around and threw up.
“So this is what happened to the gang,” I said, forgetting that I was talking aloud. I had gotten what I wanted, and I now knew what had been bothering me. I went to the police station, and put back Benny's keys and then went home with my bottle of slime.
The next morning I got up and went to station. “Hey, Sherrie, I need you to find me a good chemist.”
“O.K., Mike, but it will take awhile because I got loads to do on the bust last night, and Benny's on the warpath because one of them got away.”
"Thanks a lot, Sherrie. I'll be back in about half an hour.”
I was going to go talk to Benny, but Sherrie tells the truth and you don’t want to get in Benny’s way when he’s mad. I went down to the library, and tried to get some information on my green slime, but I couldn’t find anything. When I got back to the station, Sherrie had a piece of paper in her hand.
"Thanks, Sherrie.”
“Anytime, Mike. Oh, by the way, the chemist is Mark Kovac. He Uvea at 21 S. Braddock St. Just tell him you’re a friend of mine.”
Mark Kovac, he sounded to me like he was German. When I got to Movac's house, I was out of the city and into the rural area. I rang the doorbell, and a big German with an accent opened the door.
“Yes, yes. What do you want?”
“I’m a friend of Sherrie’s, and she sent me here so I could have you analyze something.”
“Oh, Sherrie! She was so sweet! Now let me see what you want.”
I took out the bottle and showed it to him.
“So you want me to analyse?” I
