The board of supervisors during its regular meeting May 6 ordered the school board to slash $120,000 from the proposed school budget. The action was taken after a long and chaotic discussion during which the supervisors became hopelessly mired in budget details.
Typical confusion arose when the board’s informal calculations showed an increase in the budget after allowing for the $120,000 cut. Attempts to clear up the matter failed.
With the exception of Chairman Hubert Gilkey III, who supports the proposed budget, Supervisors Charles K. Estes, Clarence Baldwin, Richard Latham and Nelson Lane all agreed that the budget as proposed was unacceptable because of the “high” increase in taxes it would require. Supervisors
