Tennis Team Wins

The Wakefield School Girls’ Tennis Team traveled to Warren County High School last week to play the Wildcats. It was a hard-fought match, but the Wakefield team squeaked out a win of 6-4.

In singles, the first three matches were victories by Valerie Steinier against Debbie Wine, 10-7; Amy Schliem against Karen Murray, 10-6; and Stacey Schliem against Donna Griffith, 10-6. In the next three singles matches, Mary McAllister lost to Elizabeth Williams, 5-10; Wakefield’s Annie Dunning defeated Ellen Derflinger, 105; and Towney Mailler lost to Lori Felton, 5-10. The second Wakefield doubles team of Valerie Steinier and Stacey Schliem defeated Donna Griffith and Ellen Derflinger, 8-3.

The Wakefield Girls’ Team now has a 2-1 record and looks forward to taking on St. James next week.

In Boys’ tennis, the Wakefield team traveled to St. James on May 2 where they were defeated, 9-0. The boys’ record now stands at 2-1 with matches scheduled next week against Randolph-Macon Academy and Blue Ridge.
