(Continued from Page 11) Meadow. Hidden Advantage, the early leader, cleared the water jump without a problem, as did the second horse over, Height Of Passion.
But, barely a neck behind Height Of Passion, Bar Jacket lost his footing before the jump and crashed through the steel and plastic fence, sending jockey “Speedy” Smithwick flying to the turf in a fall that broke the rider’s wrist. Bar Jacket’s injuries from the fall proved to be more serious, however, and the 6-year-old chesnut gelding by Second Bar had to be destroyed.
Unaware of the accident behind them, the field continued around the 21/2-mile course. Moving his way through the field to third place on his Lumba Wallah, Charlie Fleischmann was biding his time behind Height Of Passion.
But when the leader cleared the final fence, Mr. Fleischmann made his move, sending his 6-year-old bay mare ahead of Height of Passion. Side-byside the two thundered up the stretch, spending all their energy reserves in a drive for the finish. It was an exciting finale to a tragic race and proved Mr. Fleischmann’s mare to be the best in the field on this dav.
