and the Charlottesville area. David plans the trips and acts as guide, and he was glad to find his job made easier by the presence of road signs. “We stopped and talked to a state highway worker and told him that we appreciated the way the roads are kept,” he said.
The Cheslers plan their trips around the locations of bed and breakfasts and around how to get to their daily destinations on the least traveled roads possible. “We travel mostly on rural roads, and throughout this trip we’ve been able to ride two abreast most of the way,” Bernice said. “You get a different sense of the scenery on bicycles because you’re outside without a motor, and you can ride along and listen to the birds.”
Bed and breakfasts have made it possible for the Cheslers to stay out of the cities during their trips. They have also been able to meet the interesting people who operate bed and breakfasts. “On this trip, we’ve stayed with a horticulturalist, a sales person, educators, an antique dealer and retirees,’ Bernice said. “The first host we stayed with had a horse that was expecting a foal, so she stayed in the bam the night we were there.”
The homes are also usually interesting since most date from the 18th and 19th centuries. ‘We remember the people more, though,” she said. “Because of the book, I’ve received over 2,000 letters from travelers all over the world who want to share their experiences with other hosts.”
The Cheslers er\joy their trips not only because of their rides through beautiful countryside, but also because of their stays in the various bed and breakfasts. “Stays in bed and breakfasts are sharing experiences,” Bernice said. Then the Cheslers were off again on their way to Luray and another bed and breakfast experience.
