subject matter of a Salvadore Dali. It’s not necessarily the objects or the meaning of her Polaroid work that imparts an Eastern flavor but rather its simplistic lines and form. The dark blue satin folds of one series gives a three dimensional quality to the figures-a horse, a hand and a palm leaf-in the foreground. The three sets of miniatures (the other series of lily pads and dogwood blossoms) are displayed in a gnd. “It’s important how the pictures interact with each other,” Andrake explained. “The small, square format (of the Polaroids) is much more effective for these multiple images,” she added.
A Washington, D.C. resident, Andrake is still surprised that her first solo show is in Washington, Virginia. Like many urbanites she stumbled by chance upon Rappahannock and its historical county seat. A friend bought a cabin here from local realtor Roger Batchelder. When Andrake accompanied her friend to the country for the settlement, Batchelder directed the aspiring artist to the town’s gallery. Proprietor Dan Lewis saw her work, liked what he saw and scheduled an exhibition.
Since that meeting, Andrake has been spending more and more time in the county. Does she plan to follow the path of other artists and craftspeople and settle here? “I’d love to — someday- if I can afford it! It’s so beautiful, so spiritual.” She noted that her Polaroid series of dogwood blossoms were photographed at night at her friend’s cabin. “That’s my ode to Rappahannock County.”
Dottie Andrake's exhibit will hang at Middle St. Gallery through June 9 with the opening reception set for this Sunday, May 12, from 2 to 5 p.m. Middle St. Gallery (telephone 675-3U0) is open Friday through Sunday, noon until 9 p.m. and Monday through Thursday, noon until 5 p.m.
