Another Virginia politician, of course, is busily working at the national party level and is doing precisely the things that Davis wants to keep an eye on. I hat is Gov. Chuck Robb, one of the founders of the newly formed Democratic Leadership Council. I he council is an association of Democratic governors and others who are looking for ways to bring the party closer to what they contend is the mainstream <>f American political thought. In other words, to move it to the right.
It thus follows that one of the major reasons Davis wants the party chairmanship, and has chosen his particular role as chairman, is to give Virginia another voice counterbalancing the conservative thrust of Robb and his group in the national party councils.
It would make sense. Davis would thus be able to use his influence at the national level to protect what he sees as the basic mission of the Democratic Party.
At the same time, by actively associating himself with the Babies campaign, he would be making a major contribution to his party in Virginia by helping the Democrats hold on to the Governor’s Mansion.
For Davis, who, as we said, knows a thing or two about political pragmatism himself, it’s about the best deal he could have gotten for himself and his party.
