The Gold Cup meet started with a $5,000 maiden hurdle race over 2 miles.
The day’s first casualty happened very suddenly as the field jumped the fence in front of the crowd. In the middle of the 14-horse field Chilling went down on the slick surface but luckily neither he nor his jockey Jimmy Day was hurt.
Unfortunately the next casualty resulted in injury. George Sloan, brother of the winning Gold Cup jockey, fell from his mount, Mentor, on the backstretch before the final turn and was hit by a following horse.
At the front of the field Mark Stickley was working on bringing in Margaret White’s Comchen for the day’s first win. It was a sweet victory for the connections of the horse which included ex-jockey turned trainer, Doug Fout.
“We were flying fast as lightning,” Mr. Stickley said after the race. “It was very quick. The turf was perfect, just fantastic.”
A novice brush race followed the novice timber race.
No one fell in this 2-mile race in which Augustin Stable’s Head Of The House, a stakes winner on the flat, battled up from fourth place to win by five lengths. Falcon’s Glen was second, Jimmy Day aboard, and Riva Tara third, Jeff Teter riding.
