Estes and Lane both estimated that the proposed budget, if passed, would boost taxes from the current 52 cents per $100 of assessed value on real estate to 72 cents. Each cent is worth approximately $22,000 to the county’s treasury.
The board’s decision to cut $120,000 from the budget came as a blow to county teachers, wrho were calling for an average increase in salary of about 10 percent and five percent in retirement benefit. Their hopes were dashed, however, when administrators and supervisors alike agreed that the cuts would have to come from the salary portion of the budget.
