Supervisor Lane said he would give the five percent retirement benefit to teachers in addition to a 4 percent increase in salary. “That’s all I can do. That’s already going to raise taxes,” he argued. At that point, Don Bomberger, a teacher at the high school, told Lane that with that increase teachers in Rappahannock would fall farther behind teachers in surrounding counties. Bomberger was referring to the now widely known fact that Rappahannock’s teachers are paid less than teachers in surrounding counties.
