for Irish jockey Tom Finn w ho broke his ankle in March after placing 10th on the leading jockey list for 19S4.
Asked if he liked the course, Mr. Finn replied: “Now 1 do. The turf is great. But it’s a little twisty and turny which didn’t really suit my horse because he’s got a long stride.”
The final race on the program was a 1 'A-mile turf event which had a field of 14 contesting its $1 ,-000 purse.
Ricky Hendriks won the race on Brushwood Stables’ Chilean-bred Retador, swinging out from the rest of the field in the stretch and then cutting back in again just before the finish to post a I'd;-length win. A claim of foul wras called against the winner, but, after much deliberation, was disallowed.
Prior to the Gold Cup races two pony races entertained the large crowd.
Patrick Worrall of Glyndon, Md ., won the first race on Lil Fritz several lengths ahead of Heather Beargie on Shenanigans and Charles Fenwick 111 on Ali Baba. The second race, for large ponies, was won by Christopher Williams of Middleburg on Strawberry Fizz. It was a close battle, however, as Beth Fenwick on Casper stuck close to the winner all the way up the stretch.
Following the pony races eves turned skyward for a colorful and ex citing display of skydiving prior to tinfirst race.
For the large crowd at Great Meadow it appeared to be a thrilling and enjoyable day, and an excellent in troduction to the new- home of the Virginia Gold Cup.
