Snake bites, poisonous or nonpoisonous, are rare occurrences in the nation, the state and in this area. Still, people are sometimes bitten by snakes, and four people have been bitten so far this year in Rappahannock and the surrounding \ area.
“This has been an unusual year,” said Dr. David M. Schenck of Culpeper. “In the previous three years, we might have had two snake bites - total.”
All four of this year’s snake bite victims have been treated at Culpeper Memorial Hospital. One was a resident of Rappahannock and one k was renting a house in the county A for the summer. The other two were ■ from Madison County. Three were I bitten by timber rattlesnakes, and v the other person was bitten by a ' copperhead.
This year has also been unusual, said Dr. Schenck, in the severity of the bites’ effects. “This year, the patients’ effects have all been from moderate to severe,” Dr. Schenck said. “It is rare to have a true enven-omation, but it has been more common this year.”
