Carnival Rescheduled
Due to rain, the Sperryville Firemen’s Carnival has been rescheduled for July 26 and 27.
• Rabies Vaccination Clinic
All dog owners are reminded by Animal Warden Jack Bruce that a ciurent Rabies Inoculation Certificate is required. A rabies vaccination clime will be held at the Washington Fire House on Saturday, July 27, from 10 a.m. to 11a.m.
Dr. P. M. Graves will administer three-year vaccinations for cats and dogs for $3.50, and tags for dogs will cost $5.
• T .achers’ Resignations
The Rappahannock School Board held a special meeting on Thursday, June 20, and discussed personnel matters during an executive session. The board accepted the resignations of Scarlett Dyer and Kim Robinson and appointed Jon Heddleston as an English teacher at the high school, Carolyn Schramm as an elementary school teacher, Patti Waddell as a biology teacher, Sherri Morris as a special education teacher and Frank Clemson as teacher for the emotionally handicapped class. Schramm and Morris did not accept the appointments.
During its executive session on Tuesday, July 9, the board accepted the resignations of Marge Myer (school psychologist) and Greg Waters (business teacher). The board accepted the resignations of Debbie Harris and Cathy Wilson, both special education teachers, when suitable replacements can be found.
The board appointed Teresa McGrady as a general science teacher, Ann Marie Cutting as a math teacher, Tammy Heflin as a second grade teacher and Patricia Clark as a business teacher. Assistant Superintendent Tom Campbell was empowered to offer contracts to Dawn Eddy and Kim Carol for special education positions if either or both would be able to accept teaching contracts.
Superintendent Robert Estabrook was asked by the board to obtain architectural information on the high school’s roof. The board adjourned at 12 a.m. (

Books recently added to the Rappahannock County Library’s collection include such popular novels as: Chapterhouse Dune by Frank Herbert; The Class by Erich Segal; The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy; The Call by John Hersey; Glitz by Elmore Leonard; The Lonely Silver Rain by John D. MacDonald; Proof by Dick Francis; The Ghostway by Tony Hillerman; Gods of War by John Toland; The Double Man by William Cohen and Gary Hart; Death in Berlin by M. M. Kaye; and Alison Lurie’s Pulitzer Prize winner, Foreign Affairs.
Non-fiction includes Cop World, inside an American police force; Tap Dance, a beginner’s guide; The Heart of the Dragon, to accompany the TV series; Shevchenko’s Breaking with Moscow; Philip Ziegler’s biography of Mountbatten; The Private World of Georgette Heyer; and Jan Morris’ The Matter of Wales, epic views of a small country.
For young readers there are Come Sing Jimmy Jo by Katherine Paterson; China Homecoming, sequel to Homesick by Jean Fritz; The Patchwork Quilt; Babe the Gallant Pig; Happy Mother’s Day; The Year at Maple Hill Farm; Thunderstorm; Peter Spier’s The Star-Spangled Banner; and many more beautiful picture books.
There are new cassettes for children and adults including Kipling’s Jungle Book; C. S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; Anne Frank’s Diary of a Young Girl; Le Carre’s The Little Drummer Girl; Gorky Park; and George F. Will’s The Pursuit of Happiness and Other Sobering Thoughts.
