In a general sense, the lawyers interviewed consider themselves custodians of the U.S. judicial system. Looked at from this larger perspective, the willingness of lawyers to represent guilty people seems much more acceptable, even noble. Lawyers give teeth to the sacred belief that people are innocent until proven guilty.
In other words, lawyers make the government go far out of its way before condemning someone to prison.
