eugene McCarthy, poet, author, former U.S. Senator from Minnesota and candidate for the presidency, now lives in the F.T. Valley near Slate Mills.

My last appeal in June was from Planned Parenthood. June is a questionable month in which to make such an appeal. 1 can see evidence about me in the great numbers of little rabbits, and in what they have done to my snow peas, of need for some family planning. My neighbor feels the same way about the groundhogs who are eating his sweet corn. On the other hand, I welcome the young swallows in the nest under the eaves of my garage and turkey chicks and fawns that one occasionally sees in the clearings in the woods along the road, all quite unplanned, as well as the colts and calves in the meadows and pastures, products of some planning.

I intend to respond to some of these appeals, but not until July. Meanwhile I have been reflecting on why this flood of requests with accompanying warnings that arrive in June is so strongly weighted on the Liberal side. 1 have concluded that liberals are more worried in the spring and early summer about the uncertainties of planting, germination and growth. Conservatives, whose appeals multiply in the fall and winter, worry about what they already have, about preserving and protecting their harvest.
