Timber Rattlesnakes: - Also called black rattlesnake, eastern rattlesnake, banded rattlesnake and velvet-tail rattler. Exists in two color phases. Yellow phase: “Yellowish or yellowish-gray with series of dark brown or black V-shaped crossbands. Tail dark brownish-black. Belly light with irregular black markings.” Black phase: “Considerable black or dark brown strippling that partially or completely obscures yellowish ground color. Dark brown or black V-shaped crossbands. Tail dark brownish-black. Belly light with irregular black markings.” Habits: “Although rattlesnakes usually will make a buzzing sound with their rattle when disturbed, this may not always be the case. If they should suddenly be in danger, they will not hesitate to strike without rattling. The rattle consists of segments of dried skin. Newborn snakes have a thickened area at the tip of the tail known as the ‘pre-button.’ When the snakes are several days old, they shed their skin for the first time. The ‘pre-button’ is also shed, exposing the ‘button,’ a bellshaped, horny structure at the tip of the tail. Each time the snake sheds its 3kin during its lifetime, a remnant of the old skin remains and forms a new segment of the rattle.
