There was an appeal from the National Committee for an Effective Congress aimed at containing the “right wing," if not turning it back, and Common Cause warned against “private in-' terests” and “special interests,” offering the services of Common Cause, the self-designated sole representative of the “public interest.” The appeal was appealing. I was not called upon to do volunteer, work or sort out the issues. All I needed to do was send mone\, and realize. Common Cause, I gathered, would protect me during the day from the “noon day devils,” and at night from “the evils that move in the dark,” as identified by the Psalmist.
I was about to conclude that June that year must have been uniquely bad. Then 1 checked this year’s file for the same month. Common Cause is back, identifying the same dangers, proposing the same solutions, i.e., money and trust in Common Cause, as it did in the earlier June. The Washington Post has written me asking, even urging, - all but threatening me with ignorance and bad citizenship, - to renew my subscription to its weekly review. The review, as described by the Post letter, is produced by the most astute news and editorial professionals in Washington, and promises to help me understand the public policy decisions that hang in the balance and possibly to help me make up my mind as to where I should take my stand.
