IN THE OLD WEST, as seen in John Wayne reruns, the bad guys fear one thing more than anything else: The Law. To them the law is nothing so drab or inaccessible as a 32-volume collection of rigorously-worded codes; rather it is a walking, stalking, grizzlyfaced sheriff who is 6 foot 4 inches tall without his boots on. The Law, in short, is Clint Eastwood in a very bad mood - smirking, spitting tobacco and looking as the devil himself should.
