times, and was dealt with in the 6th chapter of Romans. Through chapter 5, Paul has been expounding salvation by grace through faith. Now he meets this problem head on: “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in (the) sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to (the) sin, live any longer therein?” The whole chapter deals with this (good to read). The main point of the chapter is that we Christians are no longer under the authoritative control of the sin nature. Yes, we still have a sin nature, but we also have a new, spiritual nature and we do not HAVE TO sin. By God’s grace we can choose to yield ourselves to righteousness rather than to sin.
In verse 22 he gives the exhoration to live holy lives (“ye have your fruit unto holiness” is really a command and should read just “have” and not “ye have”). The well-known verse 23 really points out the foolishness of living in sin. What did it every do for you (us)? Nothing good. Why then do we serve it? Let us rather serve God, from whom comes eveiy good and perfect gift.
