Rising Costs
Curbing rising hospital and health care costs is among the legislative priorities outlined by American Association of Retired Persons’ Virginia State Legislative Committee at a recent twoday organizational meeting held in preparation for the 1986 session of the Virginia General Assembly.
“Clearly, there are many issues that affect older persons in Virginia and our 1986 legislative goals reflect some of their major concerns,” SLC Chairman Paul E. Behrens said.
The AARP legislative goals in Virginia will include:
• Containing the escalation of health care costs by giving the State Medical Review Commission the power to set hospital rates and to impose sanctions on medical facilities that overcharge for services.
• Requiring the appointment of consumer-oriented citizens to state regulatory boards.
• Expanding in-home care community based services so older people are better able to receive care in their own homes or at adult day care centers.
• Strengthening adult protective services laws to include protection of the elderly from abuse in their own homes, in adult or nursing homes.
• Restraining rising utility costs.
• Strengthening state support of public housing for older people.
Several SLC officers were reelected for 1985-1986. The Rev. Gerald Wise of Woodstock is a new member this year.
Chairman Paul E. Behrens of Richmond, Vice Chairman Carol Comisarow of Warrenton and Secretary Jerry Kohout of Hampton were reelected.
