Data on the in-migration, out-migration and net migration for Rappahannock, Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison and Orange counties in the five years from 1975 to 1980 were recently released by the Rappahannock-Rapidan Planning District. The study shows that there was a positive net migration of 419 people into Rappahannock County in those years.
Net migration is defined as the number of people who moved into an area minus the number of people who moved out. Information for the Planning District 9 report was gathered from the 1980 U.S. Census of Population Supplementary Report “Gross Mi gration for Counties: 1975 to 1980." Residence information from 1975 is based on a sample from the 1980 Census of Population and Housing, and the data are therefore subject to sampling variation.
According to the study, Rappahannock experienced positive net migration in six of the 10 age categories. The three largest increases were in the 35 to 44, 10 to 14 and five to nine age groups. Negative net migration occurred in the 20 to 24, 65 +, 15 to 19 and 30 to 34 age groups. In the 20 to 24 age category, 130 persons left the county.
The study indicates that the region’s growth during 1970 to 1980 was due to migration and not to natural increase, or the difference between the birth and death rates. Approximately 16,600 people entered the Planning District 9 area from 1970 to 1980 while natural increase accounted for an additional 3,843 people.
