Johnson said that a snake bite victim should remain calm and call a 1 rescue squad as soon as possible. If bitten on the leg, the person should take his or her shoe off. He said that cutting and sucking the wound is not advised unless the victim is in a remote area. Squad personnel will sometimes put a constricting band above the bite, but tourniquets are not recommended.
Johnson said that cold packs are sometimes used to slow the flow of | blood from the wound, and that then | the victim is transported as quickly as possible to a hospital emergency room.
At th^ emergency room. Dr. Schenck said that the first step in treatment of a snake bite is observation. If possible, the snake should be killed and taken to the hospital, too, so that its type and the amount of venom it has left can be determined.
