Every Virginia state certified teacher must renew their teaching certificate every five years. This is done by taking the equivalent of six semester hours of college credit during the five year period.
Teacher Lois Atwood said, “I took the course for recertification. However, I realized my need to learn more about computers. I think in today’s society having that knowledge is a must.”
Assistant Superintendent Tom Campbell commented, “Professional development opportunities are very important in order that staff members can stay abreast of recent developments in any particular field. The development of “userfriendly” microcomputers is a very good example. We try to offer at least one course in the county each year to encourage continued professional growth.”
“Computer Science for Teachers” emphasized computer applications in the educational setting. It enabled each teacher to use microconjputers as an instructional management tool. The teachers were' also introduced to word processing, data base management, and electronic spreadsheets.
Instructor Charles Blohowiak received his bachelor of science degree at Texas A and M University in computer science with a minor in mathematics. He has spent ten years working with computers in the financial market, doing bank processing for twenty-six banks, being a computer consultant at Virginia Tech
