Virginia fanners and agribusiness join together with all Virginians to commemorate the industry of agriculture and its contribution to all Americans and the people of the world, it may be well to recall that not only were George Washington and Thomas Jefferson the leading political figures of their time but they were also the leading agriculturists of their time,” according to H. Earl Longest, president of the Virginia Agribusiness Council.
Mr. Longest said agriculture has played a crucial role in our state and nation’s development since Washington’s and Jefferson’s involvement in the industry. Mr. Longest also said that Americans fed well from the bounty produced by farmers have gone on to make America the strongest nation on earth.
“I believe Virginia agricultural leaders will develop the ingenuity and find the fortitude to turn the industry into a profitable industry again. It will take time and there will be many casualties among our practicing farmers as our industry moves into a survival mode before its upswing,” according to Mr. Longest.
