The spring fire season is fast approaching. The temperatures are warming and the days are getting longer. This means high fire danger until about mid-May, when vegetation has fully greened up. To lessen the risk of a trash or debris fire escaping, Virginia has the 4 p.m. burning law.
This law states that NO OPEN AIR BURNING CAN BE DONE WITHIN 300 FEET OF WOODLAND (or any material such as a broomsedge field that is capable of carrying a fire to woodland) EXCEPT BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 4 P M. AND 12 MIDNIGHT. The law applies to any open air burning from March 1 to May 15.
After 4 p.m., the temperature and wind have decreased and the relative humidity has gone up. Burning under these conditions is now safer, but not totally safe. If you have trash or debris to bum, wait until a damp, wet day even though it may be after 4 p.m.
Burning in a barrel without a lid or cover or a barrel that has holes is considered an open air fire. If your barrel has holes in it and no lid to fully cover the top, wait until after 4 p.m. Every year, we have several forest fires as a result of burning in a barrel.
There are other forest fire laws that are in effect the year round. Also, whoever lets a fire escape shall be liable for the suppression costs incurred. Below are some other important laws regarding fire safety.
• Failure to totally extinguish a fire before leaving it unattended is illegal.

dean’s list
Cathy Ann Atkins of Flint Hill has been named to the Longwood College dean’s list. She is one of 216 students cited for outstanding academic achievement during the first semester of 1985-86.
These students earned an academic average of at least 3.5 (B +). There were 36 Longwood students who made 4.0 or all A’s.
