The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services held a hearing February 14 to discuss joint state and local plans to suppress gypsy moth infestations throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. The proposed plan outlines a suppression program that incorporates various treatment strategies and controls that have been proven effective in other states which have had to deal with gypsy moth infestations.
Approximately $120,000 has been set aside in the budget for costsharing programs to deal with this potentially devastating problem. This fund will be utilized, in part, to spray about 26,000 acres in the most critically affected areas of the Commonwealth, including portions of Clarke and Warren Counties.
Most of the damage inflicted by gypsy moths is done during their caterpillar stage, when the insects feed on the leaves of hardwood and conifer trees, resulting in defoliation and a concomitant drain on the tree’s production of food. The gypsy moth also has been known to damage property, such as houses and mailboxes, as it leaves behind indelible stains after attaching itself to the surface of the property.
The life cycle of the gypsy moth mandates that programs be implemented by Arpil 15 to combat the damages associated with gypsy moth infestation.
