I wrote the recipe on chart paper. They would look at the recipe and put the ingredients in themselves. Everybody had a chance to put something in and use the electric mixer,” Miss Decker continued. “They put it in the loaf pans and watched it for an hour in the oven. While the bread was rising we couldn’t get any work done because they kept saying, \ ‘Look at the bread, look at the bread, can we have it for lunch?’ ”
“They got to taste it at nap time and they all wanted to take some home for their parents. So I gave them some to take home,” she said.
Fourth graders commented on why they enjoyed making the bread. James Fletcher said, “It smelled good.”
Leah Marlett thought it was fun. “I don’t know how it’s going to turn out. You get to give some to a friend, too.”
Wanda Payne exclaimed, “I like it because when it’s finished we get to eat it!”
The convection used to bake the bread was provided by the SPTA.
Miss Decker concluded, “All the children enjoyed doing it. They were so enthusiastic about it and the bread was really good so I suggested we get it going throughout the school.” The bread and the enthusiasm continue to rise.
