RICHMOND — The Republican Party this week continued its unsuccessful battle to defeat legislation that would limit political reapportionment by local governments.
The House of Delegates voted on Friday to approve legislation that would allow local governments to redistrict only after the U.S. Census every 10 years, with a few exceptions, such as a change in the number of districts or the form of government.
The vote was partisan, 63-35, with 32 of the 33 House Republicans and three of its 65 Democrats voting against the measure.
Previous votes had been similarly partisan. The House Privileges and Elections Committee voted 16-3 earlier this week to send the bill to the floor. Only one Republican voted for and three voted against it.
