workshop, called “Old Days in Clarke County”, to learn more about the county’s past from students who had interviewed many senior citizens. Last fall she organized another workshop series involving theatrical improvisation for seniors. “Improvisation is just the use of imagination,” explains Ms. Kiley. “It can be as simple as pretending you are the Yankees and they are the Rebels.”
Another project that contributed to the writing of “Passages” was a forum organized to explore past, present and future issues affecting the county’s citizens. “This helped get the project going,” says Ms. Kiley. “People began to talk about the history of Clarke County.”
“My main interest is in folk history,” explains "the author, “not in proving whether or not the history is true.” The stories, she says, “are important because people tell them.”
The first act of “Passages”, entitled “The Old People”, explores life during the 1800s. “We’ve got tales like a woman who freed slaves and others about the Civil War,” says Ms. Kiley. “Saturday Night in Berryville” is recreated during the play’s second act.
“Berryville used to be so much fun,” says Ms. Kiley. “People would come from all over and go to town ■ for the movies — it was so crowded.” Act 3 theatrically examines contemporary life in the county.
An unusual aspect of “Passages” is that the actors helped create the play. “During the rehearsals we would take a story and set up the scene; I would say ‘you be so and so’ and then we would see what happens.” The members of the large cast are all from Clarke County. For some it will be their first experience on stage.
The play ends appropriately with members of the audience being treated to a piece of the county’s specially decorated birthday cake.
