To get the most from a freezer, ollow these tips:
1. Use it. If it is there, don’t let it tand half-empty. A freezer operites more efficiently if it is full.
2. Freeze only top quality foods. Hie end product can be no better han the food which was originally >ut into the freezer.
3. Wrap foods well. Use only a noisture-vapor proof wrapper deligned for use in the freezer or airight glass, metal, or sturdy plastic reezer containers. Otherwise, the 'ood quickly loses its quality.
4. Keep the temperature set on *ro. Although food may be frozen at ligher temperatures, it will lose its juality.
5. Keep careful records. Know vhat is in the freezer, and label all packages. Use the oldest foods first. Keep a list outside the freezer so you lon’t have to stand there with the loor open trying to figure out what ,o take out.
6. If the unit isn’t frost-free, make sure it is defrosted once or twice a year.
7. Know what freezes well and what does not. For example, lettuce, tomatoes, radishes, and onions will not be fresh and crisp when thawed, but they can be used in casseroles.
Fresh cuts of beef, chicken, and pork freeze well, but bologna, processed luncheon meats, and canned hams are not good candidates. Butter, breads, and unfrosted cake layers can be kept for months as long as they are wrapped in air-tight containers to prevent dehydration.
The most important tip to remember is to keep the freezer full. A freezer can’t possibly be economical if it isn’t being used.
