Sludge smells. There’s no getting around that fact. But its odor is neither as strong nor as offensive as the smell of cow, swine, sheep or horse manure that commonly hangs over farming communities. Sludge looks like wet peat moss, according to a Virginia Tech booklet of sludge questions and answers. And it has the same earthy smell as peat moss, with most of its odor causing compounds removed by stabilization processes.
According to Bob Dennis of the Rappahannock Water and Sewer Authority, the county must either lift its moratorium and accept land application of sludge or provide a landfill for sludge disposal before the long awaited Sperryville sewage treatment^lant can get an operating permit from the state.
