Kappahannock News Special Writer u Student Suzanne Parker said, “He teaches us how to do things like artists do them. It’s neat to see.how he draws things.”
Suzanne is referring to Rappahannock County Elementary School’s artist-in residence, Dan Lewis. Mr. Lewis was bom and raised in Washington, D.C., and worked as a commercial artist there. Seven years ago he moved to Warrenton to concentrate on fine arts, and three years later he came to Rappahannock County and opened the Middle Street Gallery in Washington. He presently works with the fine arts, runs the gallery and does framing work.
Laurie Marshall convinced the school to apply for a grant through the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Several artists around the county applied for the artist-in-residence through the VCA. Each applicant sent in a resume, slides, and an application.
“I had fine arts as well as commercial art skills. They probably chose me for a more rounded approach to art because I can do graphic arts, too,” commented Mr. Lewis.
VCA is a state organization set up to promote and help artists do their work. They try to help support artists through grants and also increase the emphasis on art in the school system.
“Artist-in-residence means that I come every day to the school and do my art work here. I help interested students when they need it. I work in the front lobby so children can come by and watch while I work to
