“Naturally, we’re going to have to do some testing of Sperryville’s sludge, but it is our opinion and that of the health department that it will be clean sludge, class A sludge suitable for land application,” said Mr. Dennis, who has worked with the Sperryville project for the past four years as secretary and chairman of theWSA.
“Employed for decades by many communities in the mid-West, the technique makes an asset out of what otherwise is a problem: It turns a waste into a valuable resource by using the land to recycle the organic matter and nutrients that the sludge contains,” notes the EPA publication. “When properly applied to the land, the sludge conditions the soil and serves as a fertilizer supplement that can be put to beneficial use in agriculture, forestry, land reclamation and other land management activities.”
