have been surprised at how the students have taken to me, the opportunity to draw, and the draw- - ings I do. The interest and motivation have surprised me. All have participated and enjoyed it,” Mr. Lewis continued. “I’ve also been surprised by some of the children’s abilities. Some of them are very talented.”
One very effective activity that Mr. Lewis conducted was with' the fifth grade classes. They were studying geology so he led them through a landscape drawing exercise.
“I got them to close their eyes for a couple of minutes and then I got them to draw a picture in their minds of a landscape by visualizing the mountains and trees, the colors, the fields and fences. When they finished visualizing everyone launched right into drawing a landscape including everything they had visualized and elaborated on what they had thought of,” Mr. Lewis explained.
Mr. Lewis noted that in city schools art is a large part of the program and he hoped to see more in the rural areas. “Art is one of the basics that make the structured parts of an educational system more fun. It could be a major tool for learning and give a better balance to learning,” he concluded.
The First National Bank Association is sponsoring an art contest for all public schools of Virginia. Winning entries will be included in their 1987 calendar. Each grade is responsible for one month of the year. Kindergarten begins with January and the 11th grade will conclude with December. Senior entries
