Prison above capacity

OCCOQUAN — The medium-security prison here is housing close to 1,200 inmates, 33 percent more than its official capacity, statistics show.

The facility is developing into what inmates and guards describe as a hot spot in the D.C. corrections system. The Washington Post reported Sunday.

With the added inmates, visiting hours for the infirmary, the library and the dentist have been cut back, and lockers and clothing are in short supply, three guards said. Meal tickets to the dining room, which has a capacity of 200 but is used by as many as 400 people at a time, occasionally run out, the guards said.
