“I’ve been into every classroom of the school and worked with every child in the school,” he continued. “In each class I .touched every child at least by a comment on certain aspects of their work.”
Mr. Lewis added, “I also did a program with the teachers where we did three exercises so they could be more familiar with what I’m doing with the kids. This also gave them a better understanding of drawing techniques and how to help children with their drawings.”
Mr. Lewis continued, “Students seem to be much in need of art in their curriculum. Art is a part of life, a part of existing. If we’re not allowed to express it, see it, feel it, or be encouraged in that way we’re missing something.
“So I think my presence here presents somewhat of a mystery to some and is a big thing for them. It stimulates something in each child. It may be creative, it may not be, but if it sparks something and they start thinking about art, they may start observing and taking part in the creative arts.”
Mr. Lewis believes that encouragement is the key to getting children to feel good about being able to draw.
Since he will be at the school only through April 28, he will not have enough time to really develop a program with the teachers. However, he would like to see art used more in the general subject studies. He felt that it could be an effective method for better subject understanding and participation by some students.
