Tests show that sludge increases crop yields when properly applied. Researchers in Ohio, for example, found that, over a three year period, corn and wheat yields on test plots amended with three to six tons of sludge per acre were roughly comparable to yields on test plots where commercial fertilizer was used at recommended application rates and substantially above the control plots where no fertilizer or sludge was applied.
