Wakefield senior Tara Welty has been named a John Jay Scholar at Columbia University in New York. The John Jay Scholar Program at Columbia honors the 12 applicants nationwide who have not only the most outstanding academic achievements but also the widest range of intellectual interests and accomplishments outside of the classroom.
In addition to the considerable prestige associated with the John Jay scholarship, students chosen for the award receive the best financial aid package the college can offer — up to $48,000 in grants — and other benefits.
One unique feature of the program involves special dinners held throughout the year for the John Jay Scholars with a variety of nationally known guests. In recent years these guests have included Leonard Bernstein, Isaac Asimov, Barbara Tuchman, Mario Cuomo, William Buckley and Buckminster Fuller.
Capitalizing on the richness of New York as a cultural center, the John Jay program gives students a chance to exchange ideas with people celebrated in their fields.
