“On what day of the week is Jerry’s fresh fruit molding? What countries supported the US attack on Libya? What number would you call to buy four hogs? How long will the cosmonauts stay in space?”

This was the task of Culpeper Junior High School and Rappahannock County High School eighth grade remedial reading students last Wednesday as they competed in a newspaper reading contest in the Rappahannock High School’s library.
Each team had 15 minutes to preview the Star-Exponent. After the time period was up Ms. Pamela Rowe, Rappahannock Special Services Coordinator, asked preparedquestions about the paper’s contents. The teams had one minute in which to find the answer. The team whose captain pushed the buzzer first was allowed to give the answer. If the answer given was incorrect the other team had 30 seconds to answer. Each correctly answered question was worth one point.
Rappahannock’s team consisting of Captain Charles Slaughter, John Grigsby, Irving Freeman, Bill Atkins, Sherri Wines, Teresa Jenkins, Kim Williams, Herbert Shanks, Joe Slaughter, and Lewis Wynkoop got off to a slow start. They broke the ice by correctly answering the question, “How many people were killed in Tripoli?”
