Instead of horses a large, unruly pack of hounds takes to the course for the day’s final race. It’s not a recognized, or even an organized pack, and many of the hounds often decide halfway through the race that they’d really rather do something else and take to the surrounding woods for adventure. It’s a lot of fun to watch as some 50 to 100 hounds leap from the back of pickup trucks in pursuit of a drag trail and then gradually taper off to only one or two as the trail returns to the finish line.
Cost of admission to the races at Rappahannock, including the hound race, is $3 per person and $5 for parking.
