In a “living memorial” to her slain farm manager, Patricia Saltonstall presented the first Ranee Spellman Memorial Scholarship last Sunday to Phillip Wayne Taylor, a 1986 graduate of Central High School in the Shenandoah Valley.
The $1,500 will go towards Phillip’s tuition at Lord Fairfax Community College.
The young man plans to major in agriculture for two years at the Middletown college before transferring to VPI in Blacksburg. He hopes to return to teach in the Shenandoah County schools which offer a “really, really big” agricultural program.
Phillip has been a member of the Future Farmers of America for five years, progressing through the “green hand” and chapter ranks to win his FFA State Farmer degree, an achievement attained by only two percent of Virginia’s future farmers. “I had to work so many hours on a farm and do a certain number of agriculturally related projects plus demonstrate leadership by holding FFA offices and winning FFA contests,” he explained. His efforts centered primarily on sheep shearing and wool packing for a local farmer and helping with the garden at the Taylor family’s home in Edinburg where his father is pastor at one of the town’s churches.
