More duties expected
PORTSMOUTH — The new head of the Coast Guard’s Fifth District expects the service to continue its shift from regulatory and law enforcement activities toward more military duties along the nation’s waterways.
Rear Adm. Bobby F. Hollingsworth says the future will bring new and rehabilitated cutters that are likely to be armed with increasingly sophisticated weaponry, ail as part of the growing military role of the Coast Guard.
But the changes will take time.
For now, the impact on budgets and training will be slight.
“There are not big bucks going into this yet,” he said.
Covington opposes merge
COVINGTON — Members of the city council in this western Virginia city have unanimously denounced a state recommendation that Covington merge with Clifton Forge and Alleghany County to form a new city.
Last week, the state Commission on Local Government issued a report giving its approval to a proposed consolidated city, to be called Alleghany Highlands.
The report was praised earlier this week by Clifton Forge and county officials and by a court-appointed committee of citizens that represented Covington in the merger talks.
But the Covington City Council wants annexation of 3.74 square miles of the county, not consolidation.
