Budget cuts hurt parks
As Virginia’s state parks system marks its 50th birthday this summer, it is looking for new ways to attract visitors while it copes with federal budget cuts.
Federal aid received by the state to develop new parks has shrunk from about $6 million in the 1970s to $1 million this year, he said. State funding has remained level at $6.9 million annually for the past few years, he said.
Judge halts program
ABINGDON — A federal judge has struck down as unconstitutional a government program that he says created unwarranted delays for people seeking Social Security benefits.
In addition, the experimental program, designed to seek the truth about disability claims, violates the Social Security Act because of the way it has been carried out, U.S. District Judge Glen M. Williams said last Wednesday.
