Based on his research, the economics professor placed construction, lumber and wood products and mining among the least stable industries. “If a state attracts highly cyclical, unstable industries, then they will have periodic problems with unemployment,” he warned. If a state already has unstable industries, Hashemzadeh noted there are methods to help insulate the industries against business and seasonal cycles. For example, he said the mining industry could possibly be helped by developing an overseas market.
Hashemzadeh noted studies which show that high levels of unemployment increase stress, suicide, divorce and crime rates. “Stable employment gives people pride and commitment and makes for a happier society,” he said.
