Governor Gerald L. Baliles requested last Thursday that U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Richard E. Lyng declare 17 Virginia counties a natural disaster area due to the prolonged drought.
The 17 counties are Albemarle, Appomattox, Augusta, Buckingham, Campbell, Caroline, Carroll, Clarke, Fluvanna, Greene, Hanover, Lancaster, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, Orange and Prince Edward.
Crop losses in the 17 counties are estimated to be $61.5 million. Estimated crop losses are based on the projected crop yield under normal conditions. However, this may not be the actual dollar loss to farmers because many participated in the USDA’s Acreage Reduction Program and some farmers had participated in the Federal Crop Insurance Program.
Crop and pasture land in those counties and many others are parched from the summer-long drought, and agricultural officials expect extremely low yields in major summer crops such as hay, corn,
